🔧 Digital Tip

Smart TVs and streaming sticks often remain connected to your home network even when you are not using them. If one device is compromised, that connection can expose other devices to unwanted access.

Here is an advanced way to reduce that risk.

1. Open your router's settings and create a guest network or a separate network for smart TVs and streaming devices.

2. Enable client isolation or the option that blocks guest devices from accessing your local network. This limits their ability to reach computers, shared drives, and other home devices.

3. Keep your laptops and personal files on the main network. Apply firmware updates to the router and streaming devices, and use a strong, unique Wi-Fi password.

4. If you cast video from your phone to a TV, check whether the guest network blocks device discovery. You may need a separate casting rule or a temporary connection to the same trusted network.

This setup limits how far a compromised streaming device can reach. It is useful even if you already use a VPN, since a VPN does not prevent every device on your home network from communicating with other devices.
