Mexico Opens the World Cup with a Statement Win

Mexico kicked off the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a 2-0 victory over South Africa in front of a packed home crowd at the Azteca. Julián Quiñones scored the tournament's first goal before Raúl Jiménez added a second-half header to secure all three points. The match quickly turned chaotic, however, with three red cards shown, including two to South Africa and one to Mexico late in stoppage time. The result gives Mexico an early advantage in Group A, although coach Javier Aguirre indicated there is still room for improvement despite the win. The match also entered the record books as the first World Cup opener to feature three red cards.
