The NCAA is reportedly moving toward expanding the men’s basketball tournament from 68 teams to 76 starting in 2027. Conference commissioners and NCAA leaders have been discussing multiple expansion formats for months, but momentum now appears to be building around a larger field. The proposal would likely add more at-large spots while preserving automatic bids for conference champions.

Supporters argue the change would create more revenue opportunities, broaden national interest, and reduce controversy around bubble-team selections. Critics, however, believe expansion could weaken the importance of the regular season and dilute the intensity of the tournament’s opening rounds.
